SACRED SATURDAY: EGG CLEANSING & READING
Prayer • Release • Discernment
An egg cleansing is spiritual work used to draw away heaviness, reveal energetic influences and bring clarity to what may be surrounding you.
DOCUMENTED HISTORY
Eggs appear throughout African American Hoodoo records as ritual and divinatory tools. In one of Harry Middleton Hyatt’s twentieth-century interviews, a practitioner describes breaking an egg into a glass and studying the shapes revealed through it. That historical account documents egg divination within Hoodoo, but it does not establish one universal cleansing method or interpretation system.
COMMUNITY & LIVED PRACTICE
Passing an egg over the body and reading it in water continues as a living spiritual practice. The method and meanings can differ among workers, families and communities. The interpretations shared here reflect community tradition and practitioner knowledge—not one fixed rule for every Hoodoo practitioner.
Through an omnist lens, we can also recognize the distinct limpia de huevo practiced in Mexican and other Latin American communities. Honoring that tradition does not make it interchangeable with Hoodoo. Each practice deserves its proper cultural name and history.
YOU’LL NEED
• One fresh, uncracked egg
• A clear glass dedicated to spiritual work
• Water
• Prayer or sacred words
THE CLEANSING
1. Fill the glass with water and place it somewhere stable.
2. Hold the egg and pray over it, naming what you intend to release.
3. Beginning at the crown of your head, pass the egg downward over your body toward your feet. Work from top to bottom, including the front and back of the body when possible.
You may pray:
“With prayer and right intention, I release what does not belong to me. Let heaviness be drawn away, my spirit be cleared, my discernment sharpened and my path protected. What leaves me does not return. Aṣẹ.”
4. Gently crack the egg into the water. Try not to break the yolk during cracking.
5. Allow the egg to settle for a few moments. Read the glass from the side.
READING THE EGG
• Clear water with few bubbles may indicate balanced, protected energy.
• Threads or strings may represent energetic attachments.
• Spikes or spires may suggest envy, opposition or negative influence.
• Bubbles surrounding the yolk may represent protective or supportive energy.
• Figures or faces may point to a person or situation affecting your energy.
• Pin-like dots or needles may indicate intentionally directed negativity.
• A broken yolk may represent disruption—provided it did not break accidentally.
• Blood spots may point to deep spiritual distress or energy requiring release.
• A heavy or cloudy appearance may represent dense energy or a burden being carried.
Spiritual interpretations vary. Consider the entire glass, your prayer, your intuition and the circumstances surrounding the working rather than relying on one sign alone.
When finished, dispose of the contents promptly according to your practice. Do not consume the egg. Wash the glass and your hands thoroughly with hot, soapy water.
CARRY IT INTO THE WEEK
Write down what you observed. Let the reading guide your prayer, boundaries and practical decisions during the coming week. Spiritual cleansing creates space; your daily choices help protect that space.
